Colonoscope: A colonoscopy (koe-lun-OS-kuh-pee) is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.
Gastroscope: A gastroscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is used to look inside the oesophagus (gullet), stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It's also sometimes referred to as an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The endoscope has a light and a camera at one end.
Bronchoscope: Bronchoscopy is a procedure to look directly at the airways in the lungs using a thin, lighted tube (bronchoscope). The bronchoscope is put in the nose or mouth. It is moved down the throat and windpipe (trachea), and into the airways.
Duodenoscopes: Duodenoscopes are specialized endoscopes that are used primarily for ERCP. They are side-viewing (rather than forward-viewing) endoscopes that have the advantage of looking at the major duodenal papilla en-face. Duodenoscopes have a lever that is used to manipulate an elevator located at the tip of the endoscope. By maneuvering the elevator, the endoscopist can raise and lower accessories passed through the working channel into the field of view. Hence, they facilitate access to the bile duct and pancreatic duct, which is helpful for cannulation of the papilla. Newer accessories, such as cholangioscopes, can be passed into the biliary duct and pancreatic duct for real-time visualization and sampling of the mucosa.
